Coral skeleton formation mechanisms – the materials science in building coral reefs

演講摘要:

Coral skeletons are the foundation of coral reef ecosystems. Understanding the formation mechanisms of coral skeletons provides an important link between biology and geology. In this study, we utilized synchrotron X-ray PhotoEmission Electron spectroMicroscopy (PEEM) to characterize both the mineral phase components and the crystallographic orientations in coral skeletons. We examined the spherulitic growth of aragonite (CaCO3) crystals by mapping the crystallographic c-axis and discovered an unusual structural motif that allows new hypothesis on the mechanisms of spherulitic growth. Next, we use component analyses with X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy to reveal the amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) precursor phases on freshly formed coral skeletons. Further investigation on the space-filling nature of the mature skeleton demonstrated that the crystal growth involves both particle and ion attachment. By examining the mineral phases in forming coral skeletons and the crystalline structure of the mature skeleton, this work strives to establish a complete picture of coral biomineralization from a materials science perspective, from the crystallization pathways to the final crystallographic textural development. Insights on amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation and spherulitic growth may provide future applications in materials synthesis.
